Dancing is a popular metaphor for life. One must be limber and agile and go along with the music. One must feel and follow and flow with their partner. but anyone who has tried to do something difficult, where there is competition or and adversary, knows that the dancing metaphor is insufficient. Nobody ever gets up on stage and tries to tackle a dancer. The dancer never gets choked out by a rival.
Fo a wrestler, on the other hand, adversity and the unexpected are part and parcel of what they do. Their sport is a battle, just like life. They are fighting an opponent as well as their own limitations, emotions, and training.
Life, like wrestling, requires more than graceful movement. We have to undergo hard training and cultivate an indomitable will to prevail. Philosophy is the steel against which we sharpen that will and strengthen that resolve.
From “The Daily Stoic” by Ryan Holiday.
I thought this seemed appropriate to what we keep having to deal with this year. No, it’s not easy and we can’t glide through smoothly like a dancer. We have to dig in, fight, grapple and maneuver to just maintain sometimes. But these periods do ebb and flow, you may have a month you get through smoothly and the next month you get challenged like never before. Recognize when these happen and take advantage of your resources when you need them. And when it’s smooth maybe you need to reach out and help someone else who is being challenged. And it’s okay to ask for help, too. We are all fighting our own battles that no one knows about, no one has it easy all the time. Reach out for help and reach out to help.
