I slept in til about 5 this morning (ya I know) and had some time on my hands so I pulled up YouTube and ran across a TED talk that sparked my interest.  It started with a bit of history back in the 1850’s when a prominent doctor recommended to his fellow physicians that they wash their hands prior to delivering babies.  He had evidence that infant mortality could be reduced from 18% to 3% just by sanitizing their hands.  The story goes that the physicians were insulted to think that they could be causing the issue and never adopted the practice.  It’s sad to guess how many infants deaths had to happen before they sat up and realized their errors.  The TED talk continued with the main topic of proper nutrition having healing and preventative properties to mental health issues such as ADHD.  Several studies have shown that not only can nutrition help ADHD but can prevent or cure the issues in some cases.  Since most of our health care system is based on medicating first it seems like it could be a similar situation to the infant mortality story from before.  How long will it take the medical industry to take a look at itself and its medications versus using healthy nutrition standards, both macro and micro nutrients, to at least set a foundation of health in the world and cure the problem rather than just treat the symptoms.

I see this story and know that we are on the right track at the gym.  I can see an easy jump from healthy nutrition to adding in exercise to that prescription to help mental health issues.  How many of us use the gym as our stress release, endorphin fix or jump start to our day?  When you eat healthy macro and micro nutrients you fuel your body for even better performance and get positive feedback loops going.  So keep working on eating well, moving well, sleeping well, interacting with people with empathy and understanding and support those that need help cause you never know who is fighting their inner battles every day.  Your kind word may make a difference to them.  See you the the gym for a hit of CrossFit Crack!
